AI impact on: Project Manager

Project Managers in Technology & IT are experiencing measurable AI-driven changes to their daily work today. AI tools are automating routine administrative tasks—scheduling, meeting notes, status reporting, RAID log maintenance, and basic dependency tracking—allowing PMs to redirect effort toward stakeholder management and strategic decision-making. Over the next 12 months, this trend will accelerate as AI becomes embedded in planning and risk prediction, but adoption remains uneven due to data quality issues, workflow fragmentation, and organizational resistance. By 24 months, PMs will spend significantly less time producing artifacts and more time validating AI outputs and resolving trade-offs. At 36 months, the most likely outcome is a smaller number of PMs managing more projects with AI handling the clerical and monitoring layer. Complex transformation programs, regulated initiatives, and work requiring trust, persuasion, and cross-functional alignment will remain human-led. The role is being re-scoped rather than erased.
